Longtime McMillan and Newberry resident Kathy Jo Young, 68, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at her home.

Kathy Jo was born June 10, 1958, in Sebastopol, California, the daughter of Richard and Wilma (Binkley) Young.

Kathy made the Newberry area her home for more than 30 years. She earned her criminal justice degree from Lake Superior State University and devoted her life to raising her family as a loving and dedicated homemaker.

She found joy in the simple, beautiful parts of life—gardening, searching the woods for morel mushrooms, and walking the shores of Lake Superior in search of agates. Kathy loved her children and grandchildren deeply. She was kind to everyone she met and had a genuine heart for helping others.

Kathy is preceded in death by her mother, Wilma (Binkley) Young, and by her step‑mother, Darlene, whom she loved as a mother.

She is survived by her children, Michael Bales, Lucas Carpenter of Newberry, and Monica Carpenter of Newberry; her father, Richard Young of Oregon; her siblings, Rick Young of Alabama, Debbie Young of California, and Deanna Young of California; and her grandchildren, California, McKinna, Matthew, and Brodie.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Kathy’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
