Gene Carl Nelson, age 74, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on June 9, 2026, at the Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie. He was born on October 19, 1951, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, to Carl and Erleen (Duca) Nelson.

Gene worked at the Sault Area Public Schools throughout his career. He was an avid fisherman who spent countless hours on the St. Mary’s River reeling in perch, whitefish, and occasionally trolling for northern pike. He rarely returned home empty-handed. During the winter months, Gene and Mary Lou enjoyed snowmobiling together and looked forward to their annual trips to Grand Marais, creating many cherished memories along the way.

Gene is survived by his lifetime partner of forty-three years, Mary Lou Moher; nephews, Tom (Kim) Nelson and Todd (Joy) Nelson both of Sault Ste. Marie; nieces, Tracy (Brandon) McKerchie of Sault Ste. Marie and Michelle Randolph of Salem, Ohio.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Erleen; and brothers, Gary Nelson and Glen Nelson.

Per Gene’s wishes there will be no services.
