Obituary For Frederick Wayne Smith

Frederick Wayne Smith, age 71, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on July 26, 2026, at Hearthside Assisted Living in Sault Ste. Marie. He was born October 29, 1954, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Fred and Frances (Causley) Smith.

Fred lived a life centered around family, simple pleasures, and the people he loved most. He was proud of his heritage and had a deep appreciation for his community and the values that shaped his life.

Fred graduated from Sault High School. He was a devoted father of four children and treasured every opportunity to create lasting memories with them. He shared an especially close bond with his daughter, Kayla. Together they spent countless hours listening to music, sharing cups of coffee, smoking cigarettes, laughing, and simply enjoying one another's company. Their relationship was built on unconditional love, enduring friendship, and countless memories that will forever be cherished by those who knew them.

Fred was a proud member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and valued the traditions and heritage of his people.

In his free time, Fred enjoyed playing card games, especially cribbage and solitaire. He was an avid fan of the television series “Ice Road Truckers” and rarely started a day without a good cup of coffee. He found happiness in life's simple moments and will be remembered for his love of family, his easygoing nature, and the special connections he shared with those closest to him.

Fred is survived by his children, Kayla Smith, Fred Smith, Virginia Smith and Shawna Quinn; grandchildren, Falcon Smith, Juneblee Daniele, and Audrey Smith; and sisters, Betty Smith and Maggie Rounds.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Frances; and siblings, Nancy Smith, Annloe Smith, and Tad Smith.

Memorial Gathering will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Hessel Tribal Center, 3355 N. 3 Mile Road, Hessel, MI 49745. Memorial begins at 3:00 PM.
