Elaine Maxine (Dowd) Sprague, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed to be face to face with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on July 28, 2026, at the age of 89 with her children by her side. Born on November 7, 1936, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Elaine was the cherished daughter of Donner and Doris Dowd.

Elaine's life was a mixture of love, hard work, caregiving, hobbies, and continued learning. She grew up in a happy household alongside her brother, Donner “Butch” Dowd Jr., where they enjoyed many adventures at the "stone house" in Fibre, Michigan. She went on to become the valedictorian of her 1954 class at Rudyard High School. Her passion for excellence in learning led her to Wheaton College and Western Michigan University, where she earned her B.S. in English Education. In 1985, Elaine furthered her academic pursuits with a master's degree in library science from Northern Michigan University.

In 1958, Elaine married her beloved Nicholas Keith Sprague. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter, raising three energetic and curious children, Matt (Sonja), Mark (Karen), and Beth (Bryan), on the Fibre prairie. Their children were encouraged and allowed to explore freely and create their own magical and unfettered fun that they have used in their adult life regularly. Many happy times were spent camping in rustic campgrounds. Their family gatherings at the iconic red brick house became treasured memories for their children and grandchildren, who fondly recall the freedom and pure joy of those days. Elaine always wanted to help the kids and grandkids have rich experiences. The summers were idyllic and full of many great memories and adventures.

A dedicated educator, Elaine began her career as a high school English teacher in Richland, Michigan. After moving north to Rudyard with Keith for work, Elaine took time to care for her young family. She returned to the workforce in 1978, becoming the Media Specialist at the Rudyard Library. Elaine was recognized for her contributions with the Woman of Distinction award from Delta Kappa Gamma in 2008, and the EUP Reading Council award in 1992. She was also recognized as the "Person of the Year", during the Rudyard Summerfest.

Elaine's love for her community was evident through her active involvement in numerous organizations. She was a devoted member of Grace Bible Church for over five decades, played cello with Cantus Celli, was a charter member of the Rudyard Historical Society, and a joyful singer with the Sweet Adelines and The Hiawathaland Community Chorus.

Her passion for life extended to her hobbies. Elaine was an avid reader, often absorbing three books at the same time, and found joy in reading aloud to children. Her own kids especially remember having Elaine read aloud The Chronicles of Narnia and The Little House on the Prairie series, among many other books. She was a skilled pianist, frequently accompanying solo and ensemble performances and offering piano lessons to many. Elaine learned to play cello later in life, demonstrating her ability to pursue her love of life-long learning. She was always ready to play Scrabble and kept her own score with Jeopardy each evening where she would then report her points to her kids. Elaine enjoyed knitting, needlepointing and painting. She was passionate about interviewing, writing and editing diligently for numerous published books to preserve local history. Elaine's intellectual pursuits were numerous and accomplished.

Elaine's warmth and grace were hallmarks of her character. Known for her friendly smile and welcoming nature, she never met a stranger. Elaine offered advice (when asked) with kindness and wisdom. She lived a life of strong faith and showed grace as an example to all. Elaine gave people the benefit of the doubt. Her motto was "people are more important than things". Her kitchen was always open, with homemade cheeseburger soup, fresh sourdough bread, and warm brownies ready to nourish both body and soul.

Elaine was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Nicholas Keith, and her parents, Donner and Doris. She leaves behind a loving family, including her children and their spouses, her brother, Donner (Trish) Dowd Jr.; six grandchildren, Jacob (Maggie) Strong, Megan (Chris) Lyche, Emma (Daniel) Baker, Jonah (Alison) Sprague, Benjamin (Macy) Strong, and Elijah Sprague; six great-grandchildren, Jase, Cade, Jeremiah, Collins, Josie, and Millie; brother-in-law, Eric (Artice) Sprague; nephews, Kevin (Penny) Sprague, Nicholas Sprague and Skyler Vincek; and nieces, Kim Vincek, Kathy Dowd, Kelly Dowd, Jordyn Roe and Selina Sprague.

Visitation for Elaine will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon
At Family Life Funeral Homes, 24549 S. M-129, Pickford, MI 49774. The funeral service will follow immediately at 12:00 Noon, with burial to follow at North Rudyard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Rudyard Historical Society, 18725 S. Mackinac Trail Rudyard, MI 49780 or North Woods Hospice, 226 S. Cedar St. Manistique, MI 49854, in honor of Elaine's memory.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Freighter View Assisted Living and North Woods Hospice for their dedicated care and support. Elaine's legacy of love, kindness, and grace will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate to have known her.
