Obituary For Doris Rae McDowell

Doris Rae (Dowd) McDowell, age 92, of Rudyard, Michigan, died on June 26, 2026, at White Wiles Assisted Living. She was born on January 30, 1934, in Fibre, Michigan, to Fred and Gertrude (Dalman) Dowd.

Doris was raised on the family farm in Fibre, Michigan, alongside her parents and her six siblings. Growing up on the farm instilled in her the values of hard work, faith, and family that remained at the center of her life. She attended the Fibre School before graduating from Rudyard High School with the class of 1952.

While in the ninth grade, Doris met the love of her life, Leonard. They were married in 1952 and built a beautiful life together rooted in love, partnership, and family. Whether they were farming, working in the hay fields, snowmobiling, spending time at hunting camp, hosting card parties and saunas, or enjoying their standing Saturday dinner dates with dear friends, Fayda and Ken Mills, they truly enjoyed doing everything together. Their love and devotion to one another was evident to everyone who knew them.

Doris devoted her life to caring for others. She worked at the Little Red Candy Store alongside her sister Laura, taught ceramics from her home, babysat many local children, and later found her calling as a cook at Rudyard Schools, where she proudly served students for many years. She loved seeing the students each day and was known for making sure a few favorites always received an extra helping.

She was an active member of the Rudyard Presbyterian Church and generously gave her time to her community. She served as a Girl Scout leader when her daughters were young, coached girls' softball, and even played herself, earning a reputation as one of the best first basemen in the adult league.

Above all else, Doris treasured her family. Her home was the heart of countless memories, where everyone was always welcome and no one ever left hungry. She found great joy in preparing each family member's favorite birthday meal, baking trays of Christmas cookies, hosting weekly family dinners, and bringing loved ones together for every holiday. The kitchen was her happy place, and cooking was one of the many ways she expressed her love. Family and friends will forever remember her banana bread, no-bake cookies, baked chicken, coleslaw, wilted salad, jelly roll, and just about everything else she made with an extra dash of sugar.

If you stopped by Doris's house, there was a good chance you would find the Tigers game playing on the television, something delicious baking in the oven, hummingbirds fluttering around the feeders outside her window, and a seat waiting for you at the table. She had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged, and no visit ever ended without a full stomach and a full heart.

Doris also found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan who rarely missed a game, belonged to the same Tunk card club for more than sixty years, loved a good game of Bingo, and enjoyed trying her luck on the Sizzling Sevens. She took great pride in her yard, especially mowing the lawn.

Those who knew Doris will remember her as an honest, strong, and deeply loving woman whose kindness was shown more through her actions than her words. She never sought recognition for the many ways she cared for others; she simply loved well. Whether sharing a meal, cheering on the Tigers, tending her flowers, or gathering family around her table, Doris found joy in the everyday moments that became lifelong memories for those she loved. Her greatest legacy is the family she cherished so deeply and the countless lives she touched with her generosity, warmth, unwavering love, and the example she set of a life well lived.

Doris is survived by her children, Debbie (Rick) Mullins, Randy (Michelle Benson) McDowell, and Kori (Jim) Eby; grandchildren, Michael (Sarah) McDowell, Melissa (Marc) Fountain, Derrick Mullins, Hayley (Josh) Parks, Joe (Jaimee) Becker, Jesse (Dana) Becker, Jamie (Cameron) Metz, Breana (Josh) McCoy, Lance Anderson, Lisa Anderson, and Breeanna McDowell; great-grandchildren, Jarett (Taryn) King, Keith McDowell, Eli McDowell, Ian McDowell, Connor Parks, Jacob Parks, Mackenzie Parks, Charlee Becker, Chase Becker, River Becker, Kit Becker, Holden Metz, Stella Becker, Ruby Becker, Lucas McCoy, Olivia McCoy, Dawson Huyck, Lahonna Causley, and Sequoia Causley.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gertie; husband, Leonard; son, Richard (Christine) McDowell; sisters, Helen, Molly, Joyce, Beth, Laura; and brother, Bud.
