Known to everyone as "Grama Dee," Doris was also known for her signature closing, "Jesus loves you more." She spent her years at home in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where she inspired her family with her belief that children should always come first. Doris lovingly cared for her mother and her sister, Grace, for many years, demonstrating a lifetime of selfless devotion to those she loved.
Doris enjoyed crocheting, working puzzles, and visits from her many grandchildren. She was especially admired for her delicious french toast, fried potatoes, and famous fried spaghetti.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Rose King; sons, Ronnie (Karla) Nelson and Philip (Mary) Nelson; grandchildren, Shannon, Tyler, Brandy, Kristyn (Keith), Brandon, Brittany, Jordan, Lindsay, and Levi; great-grandchildren, Charity, Grayce, Shelby, Eligh, Josh, Joel, and Laela; great-great-grandchildren, Ravyn, Asher, Harmony, and Arbor; as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless others whom she loved and treated as her own children.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Violet Gardner; brothers, Francis, James, Billy, and Clark; sisters, Rose, Neva, Sandy, Grace, and Alice; grandson, Nickolas; son-in-law, Brad King; and nieces, Eva, Jane, and Barb.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Hospice of the EUP for their compassionate care and support provided to Doris in her home.
Though her death brings great sadness, her family finds comfort in the love she gave, the memories she created, and the lasting impact she made on all who knew her. She will be forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 1:30 PM until 4:00 PM at the Sault Tribe Cultural Center, 11 Ice Circle, Chi Mukwa, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Grama Dee's memory by purchasing a small gift or gift card for someone special in your life. Simply sign it:

XOXO, Grama Dee
