Obituary For David Craig Lewis

David Craig Lewis, age 91, of Trout Lake, Michigan, died on April 22, 2026, in Sault Ste. Marie,
Michigan. He was born on February 1, 1935, in Flushing, Michigan, to Wingfield Joseph and
Ethel Beatrice (Crittenden) Lewis.

David was raised in Flushing and graduated from Flushing High School. Following graduation,
he enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1953 to 1955. During his time in Germany,
he was stationed alongside his older brother, Donald.

After his honorable discharge, David pursued a technical degree in Diesel Engineering. He then
moved to Lompoc, California, where he worked for Lockheed as a missile site foreman at
Vandenberg Air Force Base. In 1964, he returned to Michigan and settled in Trout Lake, where
he raised two children with his then wife, Barbara. He was a brilliant mechanic, and he owned
and operated a gas station and auto repair shop until 1971. He then began a long career with
Mead Paper Company, serving as Yard Supervisor until his retirement in 1994.

David served for a time on the Rudyard Area School Board when his children were young and
took pride in contributing to his community. David loved his 80-acre farm, where he planted
many trees over the years, raised chickens, and baled hay that was sold as far away as Kentucky.

A succession of antique and modern snow mobiles entertained David and his kids during many
long winters. He enjoyed attending old car shows and for several years owned a pristine Ford
Model A. Bowling was a special passion and he bowled on various leagues in the area. In
retirement, David enjoyed reading, playing cribbage, watching TV, and attending community
lunches in Trout Lake. He was a quiet man who lived his life with integrity.

David is survived by his daughter, Julia (John) Lewis of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter,
Gina Lewis; sister, Beverly Cooper of Spring Lake, Michigan; ex-wife, Barbara Gruenewald of
Sault Ste. Marie; ten nieces and nephews; and his beloved friends, Pam and Jeff Harrison of
Rudyard, Michigan; and Tom Jarvie of Trout Lake.

David was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Alan Lewis; brothers, Donald Lewis and Gary
Lewis; and parents, Wingfield and Ethel.

Per David’s wishes no services are being held.

David was a strong supporter of Disabled American Veterans. Contributions to DAV in his
memory are deeply appreciated and can be mailed to P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250.
