Obituary For Constance Mary Craig
Constance “Coni” Mary Craig, age 84, of Drummond Island, Michigan, passed away peacefully in her home on July 10, 2026. She was born on April 30, 1942, in Pontiac, Michigan, to her mother, Leora (Knowles) Craig.
Coni was a woman of incredible grit, fierce determination, and profound creativity. She lived life entirely on her own terms, charting a unique path that inspired everyone who knew her.
Coni was a furnace repair woman for Consumers Energy and broke barriers by doing so. After retiring, driven by a deep love for animals and nature, Coni moved to Drummond Island permanently.
Demonstrating her characteristic strength and independence, she built an A-frame cabin there from the ground up by herself. She later had a home built on the shores of Lake Huron, where she spent her days enjoying the water and the surrounding wilderness.
Coni was an extraordinary artist and woodworker whose creativity knew no bounds. She approached her hobbies with the same intense energy she brought to life. Over the years, she raced motorcycles, played racquetball, captured the world through photography, and spent countless hours riding the Drummond Island trails on her side-by-side.
To Coni, the people of Drummond Island were far more than neighbors, they were family. She deeply cherished the tight bonds, mutual support, and independent spirit of the island community, whether she was sharing stories on a porch or checking in on a friend.
As a grandmother, affectionally known as "G.G.," she was far from typical. She didn't bake traditional cookies; instead, she fiercely loved her grandchildren with all her heart and gifted them something far more lasting. She taught them resilience, strength, the courage to forge their own paths, and a deep respect for the natural world.
Above all, Coni loved her dogs. It was a rare sight to ever see her without her canine companions by her side. They were her true love, her best friends, and the most important part of her life. Coni’s legacy of strength, passion, and untamed spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the island she called home.
Coni is survived by her daughter, Lyn (Denton) Waller; grandchildren, Danett (James) Edington, Amanda (Josh) Williams, Kyle (Brandi) Waller, Colton (Kelly) Waller; great-grandchildren, Makenna Edington, Jaden Edington, Bryce Edington, Logan Edington, Kaden Waller, Briella Waller, Emerie Waller, and Callan Waller; sister, Kathi Craig; brother, Greg Craig; and her beloved dog, Breeze.
Coni was preceded in death by her mother, Leora; sister, Marcia Craig; and her beloved dog, Daisy.
Donations can be made in memory of Coni to the Chippewa County Animal Shelter, 3660 S. Mackinac Trail, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
