Obituary For Claude Urbain Marquis

Claude Marquis passed peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Cedar Cove Assisted Living Facility in Cedarville, Michigan. He was born in 1938 in East Hereford, PQ, Canada, one of 14 children. He worked with his father in the logging business for a few years and at the age of 18, he chose to move to the United States and proudly became an American citizen. After his marriage to Yvette Fortier in 1961 in St Isidore, PQ, they moved to Groveton, New Hampshire, and then Gorham, New Hampshire, where he continued working in the logging industry. In 1973, they moved to Berlin, New Hampshire, where they raised their daughters and made lifelong friends during the 27 years they resided there. It was in Berlin that Claude achieved the Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus.

In 2001 after his retirement from the James River Co., Claude and Yvette moved to Concord, New Hampshire, where they resided until they moved to Cedarville in 2023 to be near their daughter Joanne.
Claude’s priorities were always simple: his Faith, his family and work. He loved the lumber business. He enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards and bowling, but most of his free time was devoted to community service and gardening. Claude loved people and his garage was always a popular hangout. Having nieces and nephews come to visit was very meaningful to him.

Claude is survived by his wife, Yvette; daughters, Joanne (Jim) Gray and Linda (Brian) Claire; grandchildren, Michelle (Ben) Petry, Justin Claire, Melissa (Dan) Gray, and Nolan Claire; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Aline Collins, Marcel (Rollande) Marquis, Monique Owen, Micheline (Lucien) Fontaine, Francine (Daniel) Chase and Ghislaine Marquis, Godson Richard (Monique) Dodier; and 126 nieces and nephews.

Claude was preceded in death by his parents, Edouard and Antoinette (Beloin) Marquis; siblings, Alva Marquis, Edgar Marquis, Robert Marquis, Rolande Belleville, Raymonde Belleville, Marguerite Belleville, and Gilberte Marquis; and his Goddaughter, Susanne Dodier.

A Celebration of Life Service for immediate family will be held on November 9 in O’Fallon, Illinois.

A Memorial Gathering will be held at 1:00 pm on November 13th, 2025, at Our Lady of Snows, 261 S. Islandview Rd. Hessel, MI 49745. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at 2:00 pm.

The burial will be in East Hereford, Quebec, Canada in May 2026.
