Bernard Mason Smith II, age 78, of Brimley, Michigan, died on September 3, 2026, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born on October 30, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Bernard M. I and Kathleen L. (Young) Smith.

Bernard traveled extensively during his younger years, as his father served as a Major in the United States Air Force. Following in his own path of service, Bernard proudly served in the United States Navy from 1968 until December 1971.

After his military service, Bernard continued his education, attending college in Colorado before earning his bachelor’s degree from Lake Superior State University. He later owned and operated Coachworks in Sault Ste. Marie before beginning a career as a Corrections Officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections, where he remained until his retirement.

Bernard had a strong and abiding faith in God, which was an important part of his life.

Bernard enjoyed spending time with his family, old cars, racing at the Kinross Speedway, and being on the water.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Catherine (Clow) Smith; stepsons, Robert (Chasteen) Clow of Burkburnett, Texas, and Jason (Michelle) Clow of Brimley, Michigan; son, Bernard Smith III; eleven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Bernard was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Christina Marie Parr; daughter, Kelly L. Smith; parents, Bernard I and Kathleen; and sister, Kathy Toy.

Per Bernard’s wishes, no services will be held.

Bernard’s final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brimley, Michigan.
