At approximately 7:11 am on March 5th, 2026, the Sault Ste. Marie Fire and Police Departments
responded to a report of a structure collapse at 235 Magazine Street, within the City of Sault Ste.
Marie. Upon arrival within 3 minutes of dispatch, a commercial structure was found to have
significant damage to rear storage building, connected to the main structure. The roof had
collapsed from the center pushing the south facing wall out and damaging a chimney structure. The
building was not occupied, no injuries were reported and the area was secured to ensure the public’s
safety. The building utilities were isolated by DTE and Cloverland Electrical Cooperative until further
structural evaluation is complete. The property owners are in the process of removing the collapsed
portion of the structure and ensuring stabilization of the primary portion of the structure. During
this process, Ridge Street will remain closed, until the area is deemed safe for the public.
There are no further concerns for adjacent structures, and the investigation revealed a significant
amount of snow on top of the area that collapsed.
The Sault Ste. Mare Fire and Police Departments were assisted by the: Chippewa County Central
Dispatch, Cloverland, DTE and the Sault Ste. Marie Water and DPW departments.
