Chippewa County, Michigan. Details are now being released regarding a fatal snowmobile
crash that occurred in Whitefish Township.
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State
Police (MSP) Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a report of a serious snowmobile crash on W.
Green Shack Road near S. Chippewa Hunt Club Row. The preliminary investigation found that
the driver of the snowmobile was traveling southbound on W. Green Shack Road when it struck
an embankment, causing the snowmobile to go airborne and eject the driver.
Emergency medical aid was attempted by a witness, but the driver, a 62-year-old man from
Eckerman, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Speed appears to have been a
factor in the crash.
MSP was assisted by Whitefish Township Fire and EMS and Chippewa County Central
Dispatch.
