On May 19, 2025 at approximately 1409 hours, the St. Ignace Police Department, along with other Mackinac County area law enforcement, was informed that deputies from the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office were involved in a vehicle pursuit that was heading northbound across the Mackinac Bridge towards St. Ignace.
The driver of the pursued vehicle continued to evade law enforcement and crashed through a gate arm at the toll booth and then continued northbound towards St. Ignace in the southbound lane of I-75. Law enforcement briefly lost sight of the suspect vehicle at this time.
The suspect vehicle entered St. Ignace and became disabled near the entrance to the Mackinac Straits Hospital located at 1140 N. State Street, where the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle occupied by a woman and her child.
The woman was able to drive away with the suspect clinging to the outside of her vehicle until he fell off.
A St. Ignace Police officer and a Michigan State trooper located the suspect on foot in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn at 1488 N. State Street and attempted to take him into custody. The suspect violently resisted arrest and was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of a Mackinac County deputy and a Sault Tribal Police officer.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jack Maibach of Northville, Mich., was lodged at the Mackinac County Jail and has been charged by the Mackinac County Prosecutor’s Office with three felony crimes: Fleeing and Eluding, Carjacking, and Resisting and Obstructing an Officer.
