Thunderbirds soar past rival Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Getting the games’ first five goals sent the Soo Thunderbirds on their way to an eventual 7-2 victory over the rival Soo Eagles Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at John Rhodes Recreation Centre.

Notching the night’s initial marker, the Thunderbirds clicked four minutes in as Daniel Beaupre shovelled a backhand through the crease that was knocked in by Jacob Smith.

Remaining 1-0 T-Birds into the middle frame, the home side added two more in the latter half of the session to take a three-goal lead to the second intermission.

Beaupre added his second of the evening as he blasted in a one-timer from a sharp angle off a nice pass from behind the net by Kelsey Ouellet.

They then saw Grayson Abrahim score for a fifth time in four games as he had a couple of cracks at in front off a Kolby Fellinger point shot before stuffing it by netminder Anthony Zolezzi on a Thunderbirds power play.

Third period play saw the hosts break it open early with Candon O’Neill and Ouellet by striking before the session was three and a half minutes in.

O’Neill’s effort came on the power play as he moved in from the point and was spotted by Jackson Truchan and promptly whipped in his chance.

Ouellet then made it 5-0 by getting by the Eagles defence and going to the net where he tucked one past Zolezzi.

The visitors came back moments later to solve T-Birds starter Kolton Bourret when Lucas Caulfield swiped it off his stick behind the net and wrapping it into the open cage.

Kenny Belanger Jr., got another one for the Eagles, during a power play, by jamming one in near the top of the crease.

However, the Thunderbirds sealed the outcome with late empty netters from Smith and another credited to Kaden Dundas to wrap-up the night’s scoring.

The win sees the T-Birds improve to 15-5-2-1 while the Eagles fell to 17-7-0-1 in defeat.
