Blue Devils Varsity Outhustle Chiefs

The Sault High Blue Devils (2-0) varsity football team handed the Cheboygan Chiefs (0-2) their second loss of the season Friday night with a 26-0 victory on Cheboygan’s home field.

A 25-yard touchdown pass from senior Callen Campbell to senior Cam Labadie in the first quarter put the Blue Devils on the board. The extra point kick by freshman Aaron McLeod made it 7-0. There was plenty of action, but no points scored before the end of the first half. The determined Blue Devils returned to the field and scored twice in the third quarter. Campbell ran for 40 yards for a touchdown and another good kick by McLeod put them up 14-0. Junior Cale Bell had a 75-yard touchdown reception from Campbell. The extra point attempt was no good, making the score 20-0. The Chiefs remained scoreless going into the fourth quarter and the Blue Devils sealed the deal with a 10 yard touchdown reception by junior Ezra Beach from Campbell. McLeod’s extra point attempt did not go in.

Offensive leaders in the game include Campbell rushing for 93 yards in 10 attempts, and one touchdown; senior Ryver Ryckeghem rushing 42 yards in 10 attempts, and Bell with 9 rushes for 28 yards. Campbell’s passing game was strong, going 7 for 11 for 170 yards and three touchdowns. On the receiving end, Bell had one catch for 75 yards, and a touchdown; Labadie had three catches for 64 yards, and a touchdown; senior Joey Gravelle had one catch for 13 yards; Beach with one catch for 10 yards and a touchdown, and senior Danny DeNuccio-McShane had one catch for 8 yards.

The Blue Devils’ defense that completely shut down the Chiefs’ offense was led by senior Kaydin Lujan with 14 tackles; Gravelle with five tackles and one pass defense; Campbell with four tackles and two quarterback sacks; senior Ryan TenEyck with four tackles; junior Owen Horrigan with three tackles and one pass interception; senior Evan Arbic with three tackles and one fumble recovery, and junior Sawyer Kuenzer with a quarterback sack, solo tackle and forced fumble.

On special teams, Labadie averaged about 40 yards per punt, including a 55 yarder in the first quarter.

This victory brings the tally up to 33-16 in the all-time series between the two schools, and the Sault’s ninth consecutive win to try and close that gap. The (2-0) Blue Devils head to Cadillac (1-1) on Friday for their first Big North Conference game of the season.
