Blue Devils Fall to Rivals

Coming off of a victory in their home opener last week, the Sault High JV football team was hoping to keep their momentum going this week hosting one of their biggest rivals, the Cheboygan Chiefs. The young team had a hard time keeping the Chiefs’ powerful offense in check throughout the game. The Blue Devils did make it onto the scoreboard in the third quarter when sophomore Wyatt Peabody tossed the ball to sophomore Caleb Klier, who then ran the ball the rest of the way into the end zone. The successful two-point conversion handoff to sophomore Isaac Niebuhr brought the score to 38-8. Freshman Sam Kiekhaefer had a 32-yard run late in the fourth quarter to put another six on the scoreboard for the Blue Devils. The final score was 46-14.

Assistant Coach Arnie Hallai complimented the team’s efforts. “Well definitely a hard game. They were very physical and that style of offense they run is hard to stop, even for seasoned players. And we have a lot of kids, even starters, that have never played football before. But I’m a big believer in finding the things to work on after losses, and finding the silver linings. Some of those first year players really surprised us with how well they did their job and I hope the improvement continues week to week!

(Owen) O’Conner was one of the players that surprised us in the game. Huge improvements on defense, and even played a position he never practiced and handled it very well. Marc DeWildt had an outstanding game at middle linebacker.

(Brady) Ditmyer, Niebuhr, Kiekhaefer, and Klier shared the load running the ball. Wyatt (Peabody) despite having a few hiccups with the snap, managed the offense very well and made my job easy on me.”

The Blue Devils (1-1) will now shift their focus to preparing for their first conference game of the season, when they host Cadillac at home next week.
