Laker Men’s Basketball Falls to Bearcats at Holiday Classic

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University men’s basketball team (4-6, 3-1 GLIAC) fell to the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist (7-3, 2-3 GLVC) by a final score of 80-62 at the Hansen – Spear Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Both teams battled early, but the Lakers were able to push ahead with an 11-2 run to take an 18-12 lead that was capped off with a Blake Cassidy (Pellston, Mich.) three-pointer. They would then follow that up with an 8-0 run shortly thereafter with another three, this time off the hands of Ben Patrick (Oklahoma City, Okla.). However, the Bearcats were able to surge back with a 14-3 run of their own to take the lead. Both teams would go back and forth as another three from Patrick tied the score up at 36-36, but Southwest Baptist was able to settle down and claim a 47-41 advantage going into the halftime break.

The Bearcats came out swinging in the second half with a 15-2 run, but David Wren (Ypsilanti, Mich.) was there to halt them in their tracks. Caden Ebeling (Shelby Twp., Mich.) would help the Lakers respond with a 9-2 run, scoring six points himself during the stretch. However, Southwest Baptist was able to convert a pair of late threes to secure the 80-62 victory.

Despite the loss, Ebeling led the way offensively with 17 points. Meanwhile, Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would also have a solid outing, scoring six points while leading the team in rebounds with eight.

The Lakers will look to bounce back when they take on the host team, Quincy, in their second contest of the Hansen – Spear Holiday Classic on Sunday with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
