Detroit Police Officer shot and killed was father of two

A Detroit police officer was shot and killed Wednesday on the city’s west side. Officers were responding to a shots fired call in the area of Joy Rd & Hubbell, and when they arrived, the suspect immediately started firing.

Authorities say the suspect used a DRACO to shoot at the officers. Officer Loren Courts was struck in the neck and chest. His partner fired back at the suspect and fatally wounded him. Officer Courts was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the officer was a 5-year veteran in the department. He left behind a wife, son, and daughter. The officer’s father was also a DPD officer who recently retired.
