Soo Indians 1-0-1 against tough Compuware over the weekend

For the second weekend in a row the Soo Indians played host at the Taffy Abel Arena to a Midget AAA Hockey competitor. This week it was the Compuware Ambassadors.

Play opened Saturday night at the Taffy Abel Arena and the Indians got on the board quick when Alex Freund scored on a pass from Robbie Landis to put the tribe up 1-0 early. Just two minutes later, Colin Goff added to the lead on a pass from Landis.. Compuware came back and cut the lead in half, but shortly after Brandon Vernarsky scored on a shot from the point to regain the two goal lead to end a busy first period. In the second period, Compuware fought back and scored late in the second, but the Indians weren’t to be held down and came back with another goal when Steve LItz scored on a rebound shot from Jacob Nanna with the 2nd assist going to Cole Peterson. Compuware came back, again, in the third and scored to climb within a goal. When Compuware pulled their goaltender late in the game to being on an extra attacker, the Indians took advantage of the empty net opportunity when Alex Freund scored his second of the game with :15 seconds left to seal the victory. Kyle Steven and Colin Goff were credited with the assists.

Peter Baldwin took the 5-3 victory in net for the Indians.

Sunday morning’s action had the Indians opened up the scoring midway through the first when Alex Freund beat the Ambassadors goalie assisted by Colin Goff and Jacob Nanna. Just three minutes later Goff scored from the slot after being set up by JT Gollinger and Grady Coppo for a 2-0 lead after one period. After a scoreless second period, Compuware lit the light twice early in the third to tie the score.

After a 4-on-4 scoreless overtime the game went to a 3-man shootout that resulted in the favor of Compuware for the win. Cam Labadie had the netminding duties for the Indians.

The Indians are in the road next week when they travel to Chicago to play the perennially talented Lake Forest Prep Academy.
