Laker Volleyball Closes Out Road Weekend with a Loss to Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lake Superior State volleyball team closed out a three-match weekend with a loss to the Ferris State Bulldogs in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Sunday, Oct. 24 by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-8 in conference competition this season after losing the match by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-11.

The Lakers held an early 4-3 lead in the opening set over the Bulldogs. Ferris State responded by scoring nine of the set’s next ten points to pull ahead 11-6. LSSU closed the margin to four points (14-10) as Bethany Wilson and Taylor Fleming each recorded kills for the Lakers. With the set at 18-13 in favor of the home team, the Bulldogs took the set as they scored the seven points for a 25-13 win. 

 In the second set, the Lakers started off strong and took a 5-4 lead over Ferris. The set was tied at seven and the Bulldogs would score the next four points to take the lead (10-7). The home team would extend their lead as the set played on and held a 10-point lead (22-12) over the Lakers. Ferris State would take the second set by a 25-13 score. 

Ferris State grabbed an early 6-1 lead over the Lakers in the final set of the match. The Lakers began to rally as Wilson, Emilee McDaniel and Maggie Morris each recorded kills to make it an 8-4 score. However, LSSU could not find a way to stop the Bulldog offense and Ferris State would secure the match win with a 25-11 third set win. 

Senior Bethany Wilson and junior Taylor Fleming tied for the team lead in kills in the set with five apiece. Sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn led the team defensively with 13 digs. Morris and McDaniel each recorded two blocks against the Bulldogs. 

Up Next

The Lakers will play their final two home matches of the season next weekend as the team hosts the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals and the Wayne State Warriors. Lake Superior State will take on the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 and the Warriors at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Both matches will be played in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
