Obituary For William Alfred Fountain
William “Bill” Alfred Fountain, age 74, of Germfask, Michigan, died at his home on July 28, 2023. He was born in Mason, Michigan, on January 19, 1949, to Leo Clark and June Virginia (Slusser) Fountain.
William grew up in Mason and joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old. He was stationed in Germany for a while and then deployed to Vietnam, where he served three tours as a Sergeant. He was in the 11th Armored Cavalry Unit for most of his service there. Bill was awarded A Medal of Valor and two Purple Hearts during his active duty in Vietnam. After returning home from war, he moved to Kalkaska, Michigan, and joined the National Guard for thirteen years until he was honorably discharged in 1995. At some point, he moved up to the Upper Peninsula, where he lived for the last 30 years. After his retirement from the military, he became a licensed electrician and a locksmith and worked as an EMT.
William was a member of the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry, Michigan. He also served in the Sheriffs’ Auxiliary in Luce County, Michigan, for 18 years. And he was a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America.
William loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, photography, and panning for Gold. He also became a licensed pilot and a licensed drone flyer.
William is survived by his three sons, Loren D. Fountain of Germfask, William Leo Fountain of Breckenridge, Michigan, and Doug Walker of Marshal, Michigan; two sisters, Cindy (Eugene) Smith of Webberville, Michigan, and Annetta Sylverster of Clearwater, Florida; two nephews, Gene Smith and Nathan Fry; and a niece, Carmen Fry who proceeded him in death; William was blessed with many grandchildren
William was also preceded in death by his parents, Leo and June.
