Obituaries

Sheila Marie Gaines, age 64, of Kinross, Michigan, passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Monday, July 21, 2025. She was born on July 13, 1961, in Quantico, Virginia, to William and Carol (Jacquett) Elliott.

Sheila grew up traveling with her family as her father served in the United States Air Force. During her childhood, she lived in various places, including a memorable time in England. Eventually, her family settled in Kinross, Michigan, where she spent most of her teenage years and graduated from Rudyard High School. Sheila met David Gaines, and the couple married on October 26th, 2001. They shared a wonderful twenty-three years full of adventure and love.

A devoted mother, wife, and friend, Sheila lived her life fully dedicated to her children and family. Her passions included sewing, soap making, gardening, and reading. Her children and grandchildren were her absolute pride and joy.

For more than 30 years, Sheila served the community of Kinross Charter Township, working in EMS and later as Township Clerk, before retiring in 2022. Her dedication, strength, and work ethic left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with.

Sheila was known for her warm hospitality, her unforgettable laugh, and her competitive spirit—especially around the card table. Whether she was cooking a delicious home-cooked meal or lending a hand to someone in need, Sheila’s presence was a constant source of comfort and love. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued, and while she was kind, she was also a “badass” when the moment called for it.

Sheila is survived by her husband, David Gaines; her daughters, Kristan Brady of Kinross, Joslynn Rizzo of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Chris Brady, who she raised as her own son; grandchildren, Hannah Brady, Ean Brady, Karen Johnson, and Gordon Parish; her loving siblings, Carolyn (Pete) O’Niel of Washington, Wanda (Kevin) Clifton of North Carolina, Gary (Kathy) Elliott of Idaho, David (Traci) Elliot of North Carolina; and a bonus dad, Clayton Rand of Kinross; along with many nieces, nephews and great long life friends.

Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, William Elliott and Carol Rand; brothers, Grady Elliott and Eugene Elliott; and her son, Adam Rizzo.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 20, 2025, from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM at The Kinross Township Hall, 4884 W Curtis St, Kincheloe, MI 49788.
