Obituary For Rex Eugene Hyrns, Sr

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rex Eugene Hyrns Sr., who died on November 29, 2025, following a tragic accident at the snowmobile groomer barn. Rex was doing what he loved most, working to prepare for the upcoming snowmobile season. Rex was born on September 27, 1957, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Alva and Donna (Spring) Hyrns.

He spent more than twenty years in the logging industry, mastering all aspects of the work, from cutting and skidding to hauling and timber buying. His dedication, work ethic, and steady reliability earned him the respect of everyone who worked beside him.

Rex and Mary later purchased the MerryIn Motel and the Lumberjacks Tavern. After many hardworking years, they sold both businesses to retire and allow Rex the opportunity to pour his time and energy into one of his greatest passions, the Chippewa Snowchasers Snowmobile Club. Rex became President in 2014 and worked tirelessly to build a legacy of enthusiasm, stewardship, and camaraderie. He believed deeply in protecting the trails, supporting fellow riders, and riding with purpose.

Rex was a character in the best sense, outspoken, good-humored, and devoted to the people around him. He was a strong voice for snowmobile clubs at regional meetings and could always be counted on to step up when help was needed. His knowledge, dedication, and willingness to assist any club will be remembered for generations. The snowmobile community has lost a true legend, a leader, a friend, and a volunteer whose impact will not fade.

Rex will be dearly missed by all who knew him, loved him, and shared the trails with him.

Rex is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Mary; children, Rex Eugene Hyrns Jr. of Sand Lake, Michigan, Jamie Lee (Chad) Johnson of Midland, Michigan, Carl Eugene Hyrns of Sparta, Michigan, and Samantha Jayde (David Segard Jr.) Hyrns of Howard City, Michigan; sister, Sandra Kay Seppi of Bark River, Michigan; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva and Donna; brother, Robert Lee Hyrns; and brother-in-law, Norman Claude Seppi.

Per Rex’s wishes, he was cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held in Summer of 2026.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to Chippewa Snowchasers Snowmobile Club, 11272 S. Strongs Rd Eckerman, MI 49728.
