Obituary For Muriel J Hordos
Muriel J. Hordos, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Straits Area Senior Living Community, where she had resided since October 2025. She was born at home on April 10, 1936 in Dagenham, England to the late William Murphy and Winifred (Shepherd) Murphy.
Muriel was the middle of three children. She grew up in Oxford, England, near the historic University of Oxford. In 1964, she married Alex Hordos of Detroit, Michigan, and the couple began their life together in Detroit before relocating to Bad Axe, Michigan, which they called home for nearly 60 years.
Muriel was well-known and admired for her creativity, particularly in decorating for her favorite holiday, Christmas. She was best known for her ornament-laden wreaths and large decorative bows, along with many floral arrangements she made and shared with those she loved. She also enjoyed crafting, knitting, needlework, and spent many moments sitting with her coffee beside her pool or watching the freighters pass by Drummond Island.
Muriel is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Alex Hordos, and their children: Douglas (Susan) Hordos of Howell, MI; Gary (Carlene) Hordos of Oxfordshire, England; Alexia (Curt) McDonald of Drummond Island, MI; and Jason (Debbie) Hordos of Brighton, MI. She was Grandmother to Christina (Kevin) Holliday, Nicole (Steve) Parent, Ben (Tegan) Hordos, Elizabeth Hordos, Zachary (Lek) McDonald, Chase (Daniel) McDonald, and Rick (Mandy) Tetreau. She was also Great-Grandmother to: Molly Brooks, Ellis and Ella Parent, Otto and Oscar Hordos, Beaux Fritz, and Brayson Tetreau. Muriel is also survived by her beloved nephew, Stephen (Sara) Peedell, and their children, Billy and Megan, as well as several other nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her many close friends, including dear friends, Lynn and Kathie Abke of Bad Axe, MI.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Victor Murphy, and her sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Ian Peedell. In keeping with Muriel’s request, no formal services are planned at this time. Instead, the family encourages you to honor her memory by spending time with your loved ones, enjoying a quiet view of the water, or performing a simple act of kindness.
