Merrill Donovan "Louie" Lewis, age 88, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, at Ball Hospice House.

Born on October 2, 1937, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Merrill was the son of Margaret and Donovan Lewis. He pursued higher education at North Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree—laying the foundation for a distinguished and varied career.

Merrill began his professional journey at the first nuclear power plant in Idaho, contributing to a pivotal moment in American energy history. He later applied his mechanical engineering expertise in the oil fields of Bakersfield, California. Eventually, he transitioned into a teaching role that allowed him to share his knowledge and passion with others.

Throughout his life, Merrill was known for his kind and generous spirit. His great laugh and pleasant demeanor left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. Whether enjoying a round of golf or relaxing with jazz and classical music, Merrill embraced life’s pleasures with enthusiasm. He also loved traveling and boating and was an avid football fan.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Carrie (Tom) Beaudry; son, Michael (Tracy) Harrow; grandsons, Logan Reed and Sean Harrow; sister, Joanne (Rod) Kaiser; brother, Bruce (Sandy) Lewis; sister, Donna (Tim) Larson; as well as extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Merrill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carole Lewis; parents, Margaret and Donovan Lewis; son, James Harrow; sisters, Norma Hoberg and Connie Whitcomb; and dear friend, Patricia Carroll.

In accordance with Merrill’s wishes, there will be no formal service.
