Obituary For Mary Margaret (Dunlop) Kostecki

Mary Margaret (Dunlop) Kostecki, age 82, of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away on April 1, 2024. She was born on March 2, 1942, in Rochester, Michigan, to Marion and George Dunlop.

Mary graduated from Rochester High School in 1959, and after graduation she attended Siena Heights and Lake Superior State University for undergraduate studies. She received her master’s degree from Michigan State University. In 1963, she married John J. Kostecki and went on to have three children. Mary and John were partners in a motorcycle shop in Rochester before moving to the Upper Peninsula in 1978. They purchased and ran Cadogan Point Resort on Dudley Bay. They later moved to Pipe Island in the Saint Mary’s River where they felt privileged to maintain the lighthouse keeper's home and cabins. John and Mary were most recently residents of Straits Area Senior Living Center in St. Ignace, Michigan. Known for her compassion and kindness, Mary served the area through her job as an MSU Extension Director where she worked to connect area services to support children and families. She was proactive and dedicated to her work. John and Mary also enjoyed participating with local artists, opening the Timberdoodle and Pilot House in Detour Village. John and Mary were also grateful for the opportunity to support the Cedarville Band’s trip to China.

Mary was a devoted mother to John Jr., Heath, and Jennifer; she was a mother-in-law to Cymantha, Sharri, and Jeff. She cherished her grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Chandler, and Caroline. Mary will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Mary’s family asks that she be remembered through acts of kindness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 29th in Cedarville. The time and place will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity - Grand Traverse Region, 2487 Rice St, Traverse City, MI 49684.
