Obituary For Joanne Bernice Mayer

Joanne Bernice Mayer, age 89, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2023, with family by her side. She was born on April 17th, 1934, to Joseph and Alphonsis (McKerchie) Myotte, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Joanne grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and graduated from Sault High School with the class of 1952. She met Rolland J. Mayer at the Hay Lake Grange Square Dance and they later married on September 11, 1954, at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sault Ste Marie. She was working at Kresge Department and part time as a waitress before they started their family. She cherished being home and raising her seven children.

Joanne was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians as well as a member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She also once played for Whizzie Dizzie Hockey Team.

While Joanne enjoyed playing cribbage, bowling, watching hockey and her birds, her favorite activity was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also liked sewing, knitting, quilting, and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband, Rolland Mayer; children: Jerome Mayer, Paulette Mayer, Judy Mayer, Kevin (Wendy) Mayer, Amy (Greg) Langer, Sheldon Mayer; grandchildren: Joshua (Colleen) Mayer, Justin (Daron) Mayer, Steven (Abby) Kaunisto, Chad (Cara) LaFaver, Rachel LaFaver, Mandy Hutte, Ian Hutte, Logan Mayer, Garrett (Shiloh) Mayer, Dustin Freeborn, Jacy Freeborn, Isabella Mayer; and twenty-three great grandchildren; and brother, Bob (Joyce) Myotte of Marlette, Michigan.

Joanne is preceded in death by her parents and step-father Stanley Pringle; son: Marshall Mayer; siblings: Rita McPhail, Phil Myotte, Leona LaJoie, and Helen Beacom.

There will be no viewing as cremation will be performed. On Saturday, September 9th, at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church will open at 10am for gathering with Funeral Mass beginning at 11. Immediately following, a burial service will occur at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. In addition, following the graveside ceremony, friends and family may gather to celebrate the life of this wonderful woman at the Sault Tribe Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building, located at 11 Ice Circle in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice or St. Isaac Jogues church.
