Obituaries

Janet was born February 1, 1931, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie to George Richard and Lenore Katherine (Mortensen) Johnson. She and her mother were then transported to their Hessel home by sleigh, pulled across the ice by her father, George, and grandfather Mort Mortensen.

Janet was very active in Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and many clubs and organizations, including being a volunteer at St. Ignace Long Term Care Hospital Activities Department with her dear friend, Yvonne McDonald.

Janet is survived by six step-daughters, Anne (Gary) Tassier, Florence Cleary, Nancy (Bart) Case, Kathy (Wayne) Walts, Carol (Ron) Ammons, and Marilyn (Earl) Stewart; many cousins, especially Lois and Anne Hamel; many nieces and nephews, especially Tina Minix and Martha Keenan; and many friends, especially Jackie DeBruler, Penny Payment, and Chris Reed.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, George and Lenore; brother, Nolan; and three husbands, William Mahs, Charles Mitchell, and Wilbur Nye.

A Burial service will be held at Cedar (Edgewood) Cemetery, in Cedarville, Michigan. Date and time will be announced at a later date for the summer of 2026.
