Obituary For James Patrick Ryan, Jr

James “Jim” Patrick Ryan Jr., age 68, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on December 17, 2025, at the Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie. He was born on September 12, 1957, in Sault Ste. Marie, to James Sr. and Charolette (Hoobler) Ryan.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie and attended Sault Area High School. He proudly served in the United States Army, retiring as a Sergeant First Class after many years of dedicated service. Following his military retirement, James returned home with his family, where he worked at King’s Radio & TV before continuing his career with the Michigan Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer.

Jim was a man of strong convictions and quiet determination. A natural leader and mentor, he led by example and earned the respect of those around him through his integrity, loyalty, and unwavering sense of duty. He was always there for the people he cared about—steadfast, dependable, and protective in the way only he could be. Above all else, James was a devoted and loving father who took great pride in his family.

Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 3 and the National Rifle Association. He found peace in the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting whenever he could. He also cherished time spent playing pool at the Legion, where camaraderie and conversation were never in short supply.

Jim will be remembered for his strength, his guidance, his loyalty, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

Jim is survived by his former wife, Cathy Ryan of Sault Ste. Marie, whose care and presence meant so much to him, daughter, Lacey Ryan of Otsego Michigan, and siblings, Tony (Pam) Ryan, Timothy (Maureen) Ryan, Rick (Terri) King and Wendy Ryan Krause all of Michigan.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Charolette; and brother, Tom Ryan.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that monetary contributions be made in James’s honor to the Ball Hospice House of the EUP, 308 W. 12th St, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.

The family extends their sincere thanks to the caregivers and hospice staff who provided James with comfort, dignity, and compassionate care.
