Dakota Luis Herrera, age 27, of Highland, Michigan, died unexpectedly on August 26th, 2023, in Oakland County, Michigan. He was born on January 9, 1996, in Southfield, Michigan, to Jose Herrera and Karen Matley.

Dakota grew up in Highland and Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. One year ago he moved back to highland Michigan and began working at Bowman Chevrolet as an auto detail specialist in Clarkston Michigan.

Dakota was known all around the world as “El flow”. He had a way of making music and dropping freestyle rap, that anyone could relate to. He also enjoyed playing basketball, fishing and dancing. Dakota knew how to light up a room and a smile that was contagious. His goal was to make everyone smile and laugh.

He is survived by his mother, Karen (George Neal) Matley of Sault Ste. Marie; father, Jose (Debbie Kirkpatrick) Herrera of Highland; siblings: Paul Herrera of Chicago, Illinois, Joe Herrera of Novi Michigan, Matthew (Kim) Mitchell of Hartland, Michigan; Friends (brothers), Neal Menisto, Nick Dangler, Chris Ogston, Kyle Marks, and many more.

Dakota is preceded in death by his grandparents: Luis and Genevieve Herrera and Whit and Lois Beattie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, from 9:00 AM till 4:00 PM at the Sault Tribe Cultural Center with the Traditional Ceremony beginning at 4:00 PM.
