Clayton Joseph McGahey, age 89, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault surrounded by family. He was born on July 14, 1934, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to John and Marie (Beaudry) McGahey.

Clayton attended Sault Area High School and married Marna M. Payment on Nov 28, 1953, at St. Joseph’s Church in Sault Ste. Marie. He worked for MichCon for forty years and retired on February 1, 1997. Upon retiring he went to work for his son Randy McGahey at Ashmun Creek Apartments as the maintenance man and jack of all trades up until 2023.

Clayton was involved in many things throughout his life. He was a Sault Area Little League coach, Sault Michigan Hockey Association coach, Knight of Columbus member, Sault Area School Board of Education Trustee, City of Sault Ste. Marie City Commissioner, and volunteered with the 1-500 International Snowmobile Race.

Clayton is survived by his children, Clayton McGahey, Jr. of Sault Ste. Marie, Randy (Judy) McGahey of Sault Ste. Marie, Kimberly (Jeff) Cairns of Sault Ste. Marie, Kevin McGahey of Hessel, Michigan, and Karla (Mike) McLeod, of Kincheloe, Michigan; daughter-in-law: Kathy McGahey of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren; Nicolette, Teia, Stephanie (Jaylon), Cassie (Jon), Kelsie, Kalin, Sunisa, Jennifer (David), Nicholas, Hannah, Samuel, Kyle, Devin (Laura), Sean, Justin, Jenna (RJ), Keane (Kelsey), Lindsey, Brandon, Tyler, Lance (Anne), Jordan, Michaela (Michael), Paige (Ben), and Noah (Autumn); great- grandchildren, Harper, Mason, Micah, McCoy, Addi, Hadley, Braden, Adelyn, Parker, Hudson, J. Rayden and Jackson; sister, Joan Felman; and his very special aunt, Tiny Perry. Clayton was adored by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered for the joy and laughter he shared.

Clayton was proceeded in death by his wife, Marna McGahey; sons, Stephen J. McGahey, Donald N. McGahey; parents, John and Marie; brothers: Louey McGahey, Martin McGahey, Wilbert McGahey; and his beloved dog, Sassy.

A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at St. Joseph's Church, 606 E 4th Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon. A Funeral Mass will begin at 12:00 Noon with a luncheon to follow immediately.

A Graveside Service at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens will be at a later time.
