Carolyn “Carol” Jaye (Smithson) Miller, age 71, of Moran, Michigan, died at Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace, Michigan, on March 29, 2024. She was born on December 25, 1952, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, to Robert Eugene and Mary (Roberts) Smithson.

Carol’s father, Robert, and stepmom, Joana Pearl, raised her and her three brothers, Robert Jr. Upland, Indiana, William (Jean) of Plato, Missouri, and John (Deb) of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Raised by her mother Mary was half-sister, Donna Hinson of Freeport, Florida.

Carol moved from the southern states to Michigan, in 1963. She attended a one room school at Wheaton Road School House until high school when she graduated from Charlotte High School with the Class of 1980. She graduated from Cosmetology College in the 1980’s and then moved to the Upper Peninsula. In 1988, she married Jimmie Charles Miller, and they settled in Moran. Carol worked numerous jobs in the U.P. but retired from the Mackinac Bridge Authority in 2016.

Carol was quoted once, “I think I did good and big things none that I will be remembered for but at least I didn’t leave under false pretenses. Remember me for my crafting, knitting, crocheting, and cross stitching. Many have something of me in their house. And I liked the casino. Enjoy life to the fullest and be nice to everyone.”

Carol is survived by her two children, Jeff Bisel of Charlotte, Michigan, and Amy Brown of Moran; stepchild, Mark (Suzi) Johnston of Six Lakes, Michigan; two grandchildren, Kody Brown, and Ashley Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Aleyah.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie; and parents, Robert, and Mary; and stepmom, Joana.
