Allen John Demroske, age 96, of Brimley, Michigan, died on Friday, February 13, 2026. He was born on December 21, 1929, in South Bend, Indiana, to Anthony and Margaret (Zakrzewski) Demroske.
Allen was a proud Korean War veteran who arrived in Korea in March 1951. Assigned to frontline duty as an infantryman with C-15, he served with courage and distinction. For his bravery and sacrifice, he earned the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, a Battle Star, and the Purple Heart.
Known to generations of students as “Mr. D,” he began his career at Brimley High School in 1967. Over the years, he taught biology and physical science, along with U.S. History and junior high life science. In addition to his work in the classroom, he dedicated himself to coaching, first football, and later junior high girls’ basketball, mentoring countless students both academically and athletically.
Allen is survived by his wife, Mary (Coesens) Demroske; daughter, Regina Marchetti; and grandson, Matthew Marchetti.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Margaret.
Mr. D was both hilarious and brilliant! He was a godsend to me when I moved to Brimley and was living with a grandmother who shared many of his traits and values. I was a typical bored teenager upon my arrival at BHS. The course offerings were pretty limited after attending larger schools in lower Michigan. Hence, Mr. D was kind enough to invite me into his photography club; not because I had talent, but because my dad was willing to loan me a nifty Nikon 35mm camera. Furthermore, I was thrilled to find that this quirky, wonderful schoolteacher had created a dark room in the 'science lab!' Thus, I was able to watch my work come alive as I pondered the future. Little did I know that the future would bring 'smart' phones with built in cameras. What would our delightful Mr. D have done with THAT? He'd have embraced it, of course. He was nothing if not forward thinking and transcended time with the ease of an Einstein. It saddens me that he's no longer out in the world, but I like to believe that his imprint will always be felt. While I never became an Ansel Adams, I still love setting up shots and capturing images, especially of my 'bored' teenage grandkids. What goes around truly does come around! As I leaf through my old 1975 yearbook and the many photos that my former teacher and I contributed, I'll happily remember 'the way we were.' Thank you for your heroism, fine example, infinite knowledge and caring nature. I trust your inner angel is alive and well. Spread your wings and FLY! Condolences to all who loved you.
