The 33rd annual National Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive was held on Saturday, May 10.
NALC Carries retrieved 2,100 pounds of donated goods while United Way of the EUP worked with 9
pantries to restock depleted shelves.
The food insecurity rate in the Upper Peninsula is 14%, compared to 11.5% for Michigan overall.
Last year, 2,843 pounds of food was donated to 3 local food pantries.
The food drive is held at this time of year to help meet the needs of food pantries during the summer
months. This is the largest one-day effort to combat hunger in the United States. Starting in 1991 with
only 10 cities participating, the drive is now held in over 10,000 communities.
Co-sponsors for this event include the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, the U.S. Postal
Service’s Priority Mail, and United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
For more information and to sign up to receive food, for next year, if you are a pantry, contact United
Way of the EUP at 632-3700.
