Letters from the Past – John moves to new camp and isn’t impressed

Dear Ma, Pa, Effie, and Caroline,

I arrived safely in camp today and had a little time before my time was up at noon. All we did today was have a physical examination and get straightened around a bit. I certainly don’t think much of this camp so far, but then you never can tell what it will turn out to be like.

I don’t think I will be in this camp very long, because all of the 18 yr. old fellows are being put in a group by themselves, and they say we are going to be sent to a Division somewhere in the United States. It is now just a little past lights out but I will continue to write a few more lines. I just wanted to let you know that I am all right. I will give you my address, and you can write if you want to, but I might be transferred at any time, so I’ll write to you whenever I get a chance.

Well, it is getting late, and I haven’t had much sleep since I left home. Tell the folks out at the farm that I am okay, and tell Uncle Neil and Aunt Margaret hello.
